Dr. Butler earned a B.A. in Foreign Service from Baylor University in 1988 and worked as a computer programmer for a few years before joining a mission team to help start a church in Siberia, Russia. After returning to the U.S. in 1993, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and moved back to Waco to start teaching at his alma mater in 2002.
Joining Dr. Butler in this endeavor is his wife Susan, who graduated from Baylor in 1989 and teaches Spanish at Midway High School. They have four children: Ellen, a missionary in Bangkok, Thailand; Nathan, an accountant in Dallas; Dan, a software sales professional in Austin; and Beth, the program manager for Baylor in Washington. Of the Faculty-in-Residence role in Martin hall, Dr. Butler says, "As I reflect on my own college years and have watched my children through theirs, I realize the tremendous amount of self-discovery and formation that occurs at this critical stage of life. The young people I’ve met during my time at Baylor are full of ambition, passion, and fun. It is a true privilege to support and encourage the men of Martin hall as their Faculty-in-Residence."
