Dr. Amy Fleming

Faculty in Residence since Fall 2026

Dr. Amy Fleming is a Senior Lecturer in Music Theory in the School of Music. She completed her undergraduate degree in Music Composition and Music History at Wheaton College, where she first discovered her passion for transformational Christian undergraduate education. She continued her studies at the Pennsylvania State University, where she graduated with a Master of Arts in Music Theory/History and received the Creative Achievement Award from the College of Arts and Architecture. Next, she earned her Ph.D. in music theory at the Eastman School of Music, where she was a Sproull fellow and recipient of the Teaching Assistant Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Her research interests lie primarily in music theory pedagogy and the music of American composer George Crumb.

Dr. Fleming has been at Baylor for nine years. In 2023-24, she was honored with an Outstanding Faculty Award for teaching. She has been selected as one of Baylor’s Affordable Course Materials Fellows three times, leading to the publication of a series of Open Educational Resource (OER) aural skills textbooks. The adoption of these textbooks at Baylor has resulted in zero textbook costs throughout all five of Baylor’s Musicianship courses. The books have also begun to be adopted at other schools.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Fleming is passionate about investing in the Baylor community. She serves as a faculty mentor for the sophomore cohort of the Institute for Faith and Learning’s Crane Scholars program and as a faculty advisor for two student organizations, Music & Memory and Mu Phi Epsilon. A devoted Dr Pepper Hour attendee, she has carried the Dr Pepper Hour balloon in Baylor’s homecoming parade four times. Outside of Baylor, Dr. Fleming is a member of Mosaic Waco, where she is involved in the Kids’ Church ministry and part of a small group. She also performs regularly in local nursing homes with a community ukulele group, The Ukuladies and Gentlemen.

About her service as a Faculty-in-Residence in Texana House, Dr. Fleming said: “The Faculty-in-Residence program offers a meaningful opportunity to engage in Baylor’s transformational approach to education in a new way—one that extends beyond intellectual development to include character formation and intentional community building, all animated by faith in God.
